Mumbai, March 16: Are you on diet? Do you eat healthily? That’s great, do you sleep healthy? Well go hug your pillows and sleep tight because your body needs it! Today on the World Sleep Day let us peep into some interesting benefits of sleep that our body needs.

Poor sleep can make you –obese!

Short sleep duration is one of the strongest risk factors for obesity.

Good sleep fosters concentration and productivity.

This includes cognition, concentration, productivity and performance. Good sleep, on the other hand, has been shown to improve problem solving skills and enhance memory performance of both children and adults.

Poor sleep poses a risk of heart attack and stroke

Sleeping less than 7-8 hours per night is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Poor Sleep linked to depression

Mental health issues, such as depression, are strongly linked to poor sleep quality and sleeping disorders. It has been estimated that 90% of patients with depression complain about sleep quality.

It’s our ‘Sleep Cycle’ which matters!

During the night, our bodies cycle through two recurring phases of sleep: REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-REM or non-rapid eye movement). Both phases are important for different functions in our bodies. For example, a hormone that is essential for growth and development is only released in the last stage of NREM sleep.

If the REM and NREM cycles are interrupted multiple times throughout the night — either due to snoring, difficulties breathing or waking up frequently throughout the night — then we miss out on vital body processes, which can affect our health and well-being not only the next day, but on a long-term basis as well.
