Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani resigns as Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Chairman

Srinagar, March 19: Today the Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani resigned as the Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. He was replaced by Senior Hurriyat Conference leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai. 

Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been serving Tehreek-e-Hurriyat since 2004. "The Tehreek-e-Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Geelani today held a meeting at its office in Srinagar and elected senior member Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai as the party chairman," said a spokesperson.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been a key separatist leader of Kashmir. He was also an MLA from the Sopore constituency of Jammu and Kashmir three times (1972, 1977 and 1987). 

Senior leader G A Gulzar said that Hurriyat Conference would hold elections later this year and till then, Sehrai would continue as the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Chairperson.
