Mumbai, March 27: Our life has groped up with technologies all around! One of the essential assets we have is our smartphones- rather it has become our basic need. Yes, our smartphones provide us with many facilities at our fingertip but it has its negative side too. One of the important and should not be ignored side is that –Do not sleep with your smartphones!

Just put away… because of their powerful lights which is emitted by our display screen. While we sleep, our body needs very calm posture inside out; but while we look in our phones, we disrupt the body cycle as the light enters our eyes. This confuses our brain- whether to sleep or not!

Our bodies naturally follow a cycle that allows us to stay awake and alert during the day and helps us get essential rest at night. When we look at these screens when we're getting ready to sleep; our brains get confused.

Bright light can make the brain think it's time to stop producing melatonin, a hormone that gives your body "time to sleep" cues. Melatonin is released by a tiny organ in your brain called the pineal gland a couple of hours prior to sleep.

By disrupting melatonin production, smartphone light can disrupt your sleep cycle, almost like an artificially induced jet lag. That makes it harder to fall and stay asleep — which could lead to serious health problems.

Today there are many applications like night filters, eye filters which give your eyes little soothing sensation. But they do not completely act as a solution! Experts recommend to turn off all screens at least two hours before bed.

Dr. Martin Blank from the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Colombia University said that child’s brain absorbs up to four times as much radiation as that of an adult, and children today are growing up with these devices in hand.

So it’s always a better idea to put off your phones while it’s time to sleep.
