New Delhi, March 6: After failing to form a government in the three northeastern states of India in the recent assembly polls, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that the party accepts the people's mandate.

Congress chief took to Twitter and said that that the party will do everything possible to win the trust of the people. He thanked the party workers of Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya for their support.

He also tweeted “With just 2 seats, the BJP has usurped power in Meghalaya, through a proxy. Like in Manipur and Goa, showing utter disregard for the mandate of the people. Obsessed instead with grabbing power, using big money to create an opportunistic alliance.”

He also used the hashtag “DemocracyDemonetised” with his tweet to target the BJP.

In Meghalaya, Congress which had been in power since May 2009 failed to win a majority but emerged as the single largest party with 21 seats. The BJP had won only two MLA seats in Meghalaya but have cobbled up an alliance and will be forming the next government.

After BJP's spectacular win in both Tripura and Nagaland Assembly Elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed his party members at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi and congratulated them for astounding results.

The ruling party won a two-thirds majority with its ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), ending a 25-year-old rule by the Left Front and are set to form the next government in Nagaland with Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).
