Colombo, March 8: In an attempt to stop spreading hatred towards minority Muslims, the Sri Lankan government has blocked internet and banned social networking sites and apps including WhatsApp in riot-hit Kandy district. At least two people was killed and eight injured in an explosion last evening in violence-hit Kandy district.

According to local media reports, the cause behind the explosion is not yet clear and the victim was part of the mob which was defying the curfew to carry out attacks. Also, several shops and establishments belonging to the minority Muslim community were also burnt.

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday visited Kandy and appealed to religious leaders for help in building communal harmony. Sirisena requested religious leaders of all faiths to play a pivotal role in maintaining peace and harmony among all communities in areas affected by the recent unrest.

The imposition of emergency was not able to contain violence yesterday as several incidents were reported from the district. But the government has come under attack from opposition and civil society groups for failing to control the situation.

Muslim MPs threatened to vote for no confidence motion against Prime minister while Tamil leaders termed the government as spineless in protecting minority interests.

President Maithripala Sirisena had declared a state of emergency in the wake of communist violence by Buddhist groups that began two days ago. The clashes had erupted on Monday after a 41-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after being attacked by a group of people on February 22.
