New Delhi, March 9: Over 16.65 crore PAN cards and 87.79 crore bank accounts have been linked to biometric identifier Aadhaar. This was said by State Finance Minister Shiv Pratap Shukla in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Minister Shiv Pratap Shukla said that as on March 5 of this year the number of Aadhaar cards linked with PAN were 16,65,82,421. “Further, as on March 2, 87.79 crore current accounts and savings accounts have been linked with Aadhaar," he added.

The State Finance Minister also noted that Aadhaar linked financial transactions pass through multi-entity models such as the bank, NPCI and UIDAI. “As on March 2, a total of 6,811 Aadhaar enrolment or updating centres are operational in bank branches. Sharing of information or seeding of Aadhaar information with the authorized agencies is governed by the Aadhaar Act,” he added.

“Additionally, the Act also lays down monetary penalties and imprisonment for unauthorized sharing of residents' identity information. Any violation to the provision of The Aadhaar Act is a criminal offence," Minister Ship Pratap Shukla said.

“The government has mandated submission of the 12-digit unique identity number Aadhaar by every bank account holder by March 31, 2018, to weed out unaccounted wealth. For the same purpose, Aadhaar linking with the income-tax permanent account number or PAN has also been made mandatory,” the Minister concluded.
