221 prisoners spent 20 years in jail to be freed in Jharkhand

Ranchi, April 11: To encourage the prisoners who have spent more than 20 years in Jail, it has been decided to free them up in Jharkhand. There are such 221 prisoners to be freed.

 

Chief Minister Raghubar Das while presiding over a meeting of State Punishment Committee at Project Building said that injustice should not be done to anyone. The tribals of the state are very simple people and at times they commit crime unconsciously and later surrender by themselves. Such people who have spent 20 years in jail with good conduct should be released.

He went on saying that they should get a chance to start a new life again. The Chief Minister also said that administration should keep an eye on convicts out on bail or involved in criminal activities.

During the meeting, the proposal for releasing 233 prisoners of life imprisonment was discussed. After discussion, it was decided to free 221 prisoners. The remaining 12 cases will be discussed in the next meeting.

CM Das said “These people should get an opportunity to start a new life again. This will also encourage inmates who are doing well in jail for good conduct.”

Out of 221, 104 prisoners belong to scheduled tribes in which three are women. Among released prisoners, 100 are from Ranchi, 54 from LN Central Jail Hazaribagh, 40 from central jail Dumka, 23 from Central jail Ghaghidih Jamshedpur, two from central jail Medininagar Palamu, one from Mandal jail Chas Bokaro and one from open Jail-cum-Rehabilitation Camp, Hazaribagh.
