Ahead of DefExpo18, PM Modi inaugurates diamond jubilee building of Cancer Institute in Chennai

Chennai, April 12: To mark the upcoming Vilambhi Tamil New Year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated diamond jubilee building of Cancer Institute in Chennai. Greeting people of Chennai, PM Modi pledged for providing quality healthcare under #Aayushman Bharat scheme. 

Addressing the inaugural session, PM Modi said let us work together to build a new India that would make our freedom fighters proud. To prevent, control and manage diseases like cancer we need action from all sections of society including NGOs and private sector, he added.

Greeting people and doctors on the upcoming Vilambhi Tamil New Year, PM Modi said on the upcoming occasion of the Vilambhi Tamil New Year on April 14th, I extend my warm greetings to all Tamil people across the world. I am happy to be at Cancer Institute, Adyar. This is one of the oldest and most significant comprehensive cancer care centers in India.

Further PM Modi informed that the Union Government has planned the setting up of 20 State Cancer Institutes and 50 Tertiary Care Cancer Centres in different parts of the country. Proposals can be approved, for eligible institutions, upto Rs. 45 crore for setting up of Tertiary Care Cancer Centre and upto Rs. 120 Crores for setting up of State Cancer Institute.

Under Pradhan MantriSwasthya Suraksha Yojana, existing institutions are being upgraded with provision of oncology services. The National Health Policy of 2017 underlines the importance of preventive healthcare. Under the Comprehensive Primary Health Care aspect of Ayushman Bharat, we will provide preventive and curative services at primary care level to people near their homes, PM Modi added.

PM Modi also spoke on Ayushman Bharat scheme, he said, scheme will cover over 10 Crores families. Approximately 50 Crores people will be benefited through this mission. Insurance coverage upto 5 lakh rupees per family, per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization will be provided under this mission. Further he said that this will be the world’s largest government funded health care programme. The benefits of the scheme will be portable across the country. People will be able to get benefits in both public and empanelled private facilities. The scheme intends to reduce out of pocket expenditure on health.

Before this inauguration PM Modi inaugurated 10th edition of DefExpo 2018, expressed his delight at the participation of more than 500 Indian firms along with over 150 foreign companies and delegates from about 40 countries. PM Modi said that the Centre's commitment towards peace is as strong as the one towards protecting its people and the nation.

DefExpo2018 looks forward to positioning the country as a credible manufacturer and exporter of certain military inventory items. DefExpo18 focuses on export as opposed to importing military hardware marks a conceptual shift in Indian defence policy. DefExpo will play a perfect stage to unfold the might of India’s shipbuilding capabilities. DefExpo hopes to position the country as a credible manufacturer and exporter of certain military inventory items. India will unveil its 155mm Advanced Towed Artillery Gun (ATAG) in DefExpo. This is the first time that India has its own ATAG which has been designed and developed by DRDO in partnership with Kalyani Group, Tata Power and OFBs. DefExpo 2018 will also uncover India’s growing private industry and spreading MSME base for components and sub-systems.
