Ranchi, April 20: In order to maintain and preserve the greenery, wetlands and ecology of the state, Jharkhand has decided to set up an authority which will keep an eye on the state’s wetlands.

In the light of the proposal of Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department, Chief Minister Raghubar Das has approved the formation of Jharkhand State Wetland Authority (Jharkhand State Wetland Authority). The Forest Minister will be its ex-officio Chairman and the Chief Secretary will be the Vice Chairman.

This Authority will constitute a Technical Committee and a libel committee within 90 days. There will also be 5 non-government members in this Authority, whose tenure will be 3 years. This authority will recommend the State Government to make the official demarcation of the areas represented by the digital maps and notify those wetlands.

The Authority will preserve and develop the eco system of wetlands and will also work to prepare the rules by preparing the list of unauthorized works done under this area.

The government's move follows the Union ministry of environment, forest, climate change's (MoEFCC) notification of the wetlands (conservation & management) rules, 2017, in September last year. The rules call for setting up wetlands authorities in all states and Union territories to be headed by the environment minister.
