India says ‘Bye’ to plastic in its protected areas

New Delhi, April 28: In order to achieve a plastic-free India, it has been decided to prevent our protected areas to be announced as ‘Plastic Free Zones.’ It has directed states and Union territories to organize awareness campaigns to sensitize people about the issue.

This decision was taken keeping in mind the approaching World Environment Day June 5. Before that our country shall be clean and plastic free as plastic plays a very negative role in environment maintenance.

In his tweet, Environment Minister said, “@moefcc bans plastic in any form in all protected areas and declares them “Plastic Free Zones” ahead of #WorldEnvironmentDay2018. Directs states & UTs to organize awareness campaigns to sensitize people. Protected areas in Bengal and Odisha are already plastic free zones.”

 

Elaborating on the move, environment secretary C K Mishra said all protected areas and forest reserves will be plastic free zones and it will be mandatorily enforced. "Non-recyclable plastics have been banned. Various steps will be taken so that plastic is not allowed inside the protected areas," he said.

The official added that other alternatives to plastics would be provided gradually.

Recently on March 18, Maharashtra Government also declared as plastic free making its land to get rid of this danger to environment material.
