Cabinet approves Rs 1220 Cr for NRC update process in Assam

Guwahati, April 5: While Assam’s National Register of Citizens has been undergoing severe stages as Supreme Court has directed to make the arrangements accordingly to publish NRC by 30th June. On Wednesday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) cleared the Revised Cost Estimates (RCE) of the NRC, update scheme at a cost of Rs. 1220.93 Crores up to December 31. 

The State Government has been seeking additional funds from the Centre for the NRC Project, which is undergoing under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

Apart Draft NRC, Assam covering 1.90 Crores persons out of 3.29 Crores applicants has been published on December 31, 2017, including names of those applicants in respect of whom the entire process of verification has been completed, official sources said.

The verification of remaining applicants is at various stages of scrutiny and the complete draft NRC will be published by June 30.

At least 3.29 Crores persons have applied along with 6.63 Crores documents for inclusion of their names in NRC.

National Register of Citizens NRC aims to identify and weed out illegal migrants from Bangladesh. Assam has borne several protests over "illegal immigration" from across the porous riverine border with Bangladesh, increasing tensions. Assam has the highest numbers of Muslim in India. It is estimated that there are more than 2 million Muslims in Assam who trace their roots to Bangladesh.
