California, April 5: Reeling with the data breach, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the company made a huge mistake by not taking more steps to protect user data and privacy early on.

Zuckerberg held a rare question and answer session with the media Wednesday, said “Facebook did not initially take a broad enough view of what the company’s responsibility was when it came to protecting user data. “That was a huge mistake,” he said. “It was my mistake.”

When asked if he thinks he is still the best person to run Facebook, Zuckerberg said, “Yes. Life is about learning from the mistakes and figuring out what you need to do to move forward. I think what people should evaluate us on is learning from our mistakes and if we’re building things people like and that make their lives better. There are billions of people who love the products we’re building.”

In an official confirmation, Facebook has stated that around 87 million users might be affected by the data breach scandal. Also, the US firm stated that it would notify affected users whether their info was shared with Cambridge Analytica from April 9 via newsfeeds. Now the new figures are in contrast with the 50 million figure estimated earlier. However, the most affected are US users.

The social media giant has been slammed over a major data breach scandal by Cambridge Analytica, a British firm linked to Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
