Asia Media Summit 2018 opens up: Focusing on the innovative ‘Storytelling’ and challenges faced by ‘modern media’

New Delhi, May 10: Today the 15th Edition of Asia Media Summit 2018 was opened up by Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Smriti Irani. The theme of this year's research journal is "Storytelling in Media". Asia Pacific Summit 2018 seeks to explore the media regulation challenges faced in today’s digital era. “Today we have a vibrant media industry which looks upon the digital world not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity,” said Smriti Irani while addressing the inaugural session. 

Addressing the inauguration, Sitanshu Kar, Director General of Press Information Bureau said that “We are at the cusp of revolutionary shifts in the way we think and how we tell our stories.”

 

Further the Managing Director of Times of India, Vineet Jain asserted that Indian media market is the most diverse and vibrant media market in the world today. India needs a healthy, diverse and plural media ecosystem. The credibility of print media is increasingly valued by discerning consumers, but there is need for innovation in business models of press, he added.

Further he continued saying that a strong and healthy press is vital for a thriving democracy. Data is now being siphoned by global platforms today, making them stronger, and commoditizing the Indian market, he added.

We must proactively protect our national interest to ensure that data stays within India and that it is protected, Vineet Jain said. India is the most exciting media market in the world, he added.

Hasanul Haq Inu, Hon'ble Minister of Information of Bangladesh, also met Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Smriti Irani before the inaugural session of Asia Media Summit 2018.

The stage was further taken over by Union Minister of Information of Bangladesh, Hasanul Haq Inu, he said “I am fighting a war against cybercriminals to keep the media safe and expanding.”

He further outlined the six complex challenges the world is facing today, Poverty, Gender Disparity, Terrorism, ICT revolution, Climate Change, Uneven globalization. Militancy and terrorism are the greatest enemy of civilization and mankind, we have to fight this menace together, he added.

H.E. Dr Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information, Cambodia also addressed the inaugural session, saying “We are trying to improve the state of the press in Cambodia, we seek to maintain strong relationships with the fourth estate.”

Shigeru Aoyagi, Director, UNESCO, questioned, what is the role of media and broadcasting in creating peace prosperous planet, with partnership with the people?

Further he asserted that media has a big responsibility to tell stories in a very constructive way, so that everyone can enjoy the stories fruitfully. Since the world is created in the minds of men, we have to build peace in the minds of men.

Asia Media Summit 2018 is being organized by Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development. The theme of Asia Media Summit 2018 is: Telling our Stories - Asia and More. The Asia Pacific Summit 2018 aims to achieve vibrant and cohesive electronic media environment in the #AsiaPacific region through policy and resource development.

 

The 15th Summit is being hosted by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, in New Delhi, India, Indian Institute of Mass Communication and Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL) being the co-hosts.

Also, (Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development) AIBD Annual Media Research will be unveiled in upcoming 15th Asia Media Summit
