New Delhi, May 11: Days after United States President Donald Trump accused Iran of supporting terror and announced the withdrawal of US from the 2015 landmark nuclear deal, India has said it will take necessary measures to offset any adverse impact on its interests.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar during a press briefing on Friday said that India was closely monitoring the situation arising out of Trump's announcement to pull the US out of the Iran deal. He said that New Delhi will take necessary measures to offset any adverse impact on its interests.

“We have emphasized that all parties should engage constructively to address and resolve the issues that have arisen out of JCPOA and we have always supported a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy,” Raveesh Kumar added.

Asked whether it would impact collaboration in the Chabahar Port if any, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said, “Basically the announcement which we made on this matter yesterday, we have emphasized that all parties should engage constructively to address and resolve the issues that have arisen out of JCPOA and we have always supported a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.”

“You would appreciate that it’s too early, I think it is too early in the day. We are closely monitoring the developments. We are assessing the implications which this might have on our interests. At this stage I can share with you that the Government will take all necessary measures which are required to safeguard our interests. I am sure you must have seen the FAQs which has been brought out by the Treasury Department of the US in the matter. I think that basically gives a lot of details about this matter,” he added.

Raveesh Kumar concluded the press briefing saying, “We will take necessary measures which are required to safeguard our interests. It is too early to analyze and come up with the implications of the withdrawal of the US from the JCPOA.”

On May 9, fulfilling his longtime campaign promise President Trump announced the withdrawal of United States from the 2015 landmark nuclear deal with Iran accusing the country of supporting terrorism. After the announcement, President Trump signed a fresh set of sanctions against Iran and warned countries against any cooperation with Tehran on its controversial nuclear weapons programme.

However, countries having financial dealings with Iran are expected to be hit by the comprehensive sanctions regime announced by the Trump administration after withdrawal from the nuclear deal. On the other side, India and Iran have robust economic and commercial ties covering many sectors though it has traditionally been dominated by the import of Iranian crude oil by India. Iran is the third largest supplier of crude oil to India after Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
