MEA Sushma Swaraj shakes hand with Myanmar Prez U Win Myint making 'Act East Policy' stronger

Nay Pyi Taw, May 11: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today called on Myanmar President U Win Myint at Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar. External Affairs Minister is on a two-day visit to Myanmar for discussions on a number of bilateral and regional issues.

In the official tweet of Raveesh Kumar, official spokesperson of MEA it was mentioned that “A key partner in Act East Policy! EAM Sushma Swaraj called on the President of Myanmar, U Win Myint in her first engagement in Myanmar.”

 

Swaraj was warmly received by India's Ambassador Vikram Misri and Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar U Myint Thu. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Raveesh Kumar said, seven agreements are expected to be signed during the visit. 

Minister Swaraj also met the Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar armed forces, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing in Nay Pyi Taw, Today.

Myanmar is one of India's strategic neighbors and it shares a 1,640 km border with a number of northeastern states.

The Objective of ''Act East Policy” is to promote economic cooperation, cultural ties and develop a strategic relationship with countries in the Asia-Pacific region through continuous engagement at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels thereby providing enhanced connectivity to the States of North Eastern Region including Arunachal Pradesh with other countries in our neighborhood.
