Two killed as violence erupts in Maharshtra’s Aurangabad

Aurangabad, May 12: At least two persons were killed and 40-odd were injured including 15 police personnel when violence erupted in Aurangabad city considered as emerging industrial hub of Maharashtra on Friday night.

According to reports, city police and state reserve police force have been deployed in the affected areas to thwart any further escalation of violence.

The trouble started in Gandhinagar area of Aurangabad and soon spread across the various parts of the city. The miscreants burned over 40 vehicles, and shops in Shahgunj, Chelipura areas were set on fire.

Police administration has imposed curfew in some parts of the city, besides section 144 of the Cr PC making assembly of four or more people illegal. Situation in various parts of the premier city of Marathwada region reported to be tense on Saturday morning.

During the night, several incidents of stone pelting and arson were reported. In certain pockets, police had to resort to lathi charging and lobbing tear gas shells to control the crowd.

Acting police commissioner Milind Bharambe appealed to the people to remain calm and not to take law in their hands. The police said that minor argument over water between the members of the two communities erupted into violence in Gandhinagar and spread to Shahgunj, Chelipura, Raja Bazar, and Anguribagh areas.

The situation is reported to be tense but under control.
