A former Congress leader, Kanna Lakshminarayana, who represents Kapu community had joined BJP in 2014. A five-time MLA from Guntur district, Kanna will lead the state unit in 2019 assembly polls. Incidentally, the appointment of Kanna Lakshminarayana and Somu Veerraju is considered as the strategic move to vow the politically dominant Kapu community.  Leaders like D Purandeshwari, P Manikyala Rao were in the race of state BJP president but BJP central leadership backed Kanna Lakshminarayana’s candidature in order to balance the political equations.
