Jerusalem, May 15: The United States has opened its embassy in Jerusalem. President Donald Trump had announced the decision to relocate the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in December last year when he formally recognized the holy city as the capital of Israel.

In a tweet, Trump hailed the opening of US embassy in Jerusalem. The inauguration ceremony was attended by a high-level American delegation including Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, who serve as advisers to the US President.

Meanwhile, at least 55 Palestinians have been killed and more than 2400 wounded by Israeli troops on the Gaza border, as mass protests erupted against the transfer of the US embassy to Jerusalem.

But the other side of the coin, the Israel Defense Forces said around 40,000 Gazans were demonstrating in 12 locations along the border at the riots’ peak. It said thousands more were gathered at points several hundred meters from the fence.

The Israel Defense Forces in a statement accused Hamas, which controls Gaza, of leading a terrorist operation and inciting protesters who had amassed by the border fence with Israel to conduct what Israel described as terror attacks.
