Bengaluru, May 17: Owing his victory to the farmers and thanking them for showing their immense support, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa takes in a historic decision. Assuming the office after swearing in as the Chief Minister, Yeddyurappa announced farm loan waiver of up to one lakh rupees in his first decision. This was a poll promise of the BJP.

Having strong base and focusing on the benefits of the farmers, BJP government had taken this as a poll promise to bring Acche Din for them. The BJP’s election manifesto titled ‘Namma Karnatakakke Namma Vachana’ (Our promise to our Karnataka) focused heavily on the farm sector. Releasing the manifesto Yeddyurappa declared that the decision on loan waiver would be taken in the very first Cabinet meeting if voted to power. Standing true on their promise, CM B S Yeddyurappa took this decision just few hours after assuming his office.

BJP has formed the government in Karnataka, despite short of the majority mark of 112. The Governor Vajubhai Vala invited the BJP to form the government and prove his majority on the floor of the house within 15 days. The JDS-Congress failed to come up with the numbers as many of their MLAs were also reported missing and did not turn up to support the alliance.

The Supreme Court also stayed the order and stated that the Governor’s decision cannot be overruled as it is a constitutional authority. The bench, however, has made it clear that the government formation will be subjected to the final outcome of the case.

The Governor's move is a setback for the JD(S) and Congress that approached the Governor with the signature of over 117 MLAs. Congress had bagged 78 seats, while JD(S) along with its alliance partner BSP, won 38 seats.

BJP had won 104 seats in the Assembly elections in the 224-member House and emerged as the single largest party but fell short of majority.
