Bengaluru, May 19: Ahead of the crucial floor test in Karnataka Assembly, senior BJP lawmaker KG Bopaiah has been appointed as pro-tem speaker. A five-time MLA from Virajpet, Bopaiah had served as the speaker of the assembly during BJP’s stint.

In 2011, the 62-year leader who belongs to Vokkaliga community had debarred 11 MLAs for rebelling against the then Chief Minister Yeddyurappa. Later his move was reversed by Supreme Court.

Responding to the development, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi raised objection against the appointment of Bopaiah, citing the violation of norms. The Congress leader slammed Governor Vajubhai Vala for neglecting the 8-time Congress MLA and former Minister RV Deshpande.

The senior most BJP lawmaker will oversee the high-stakes political development on Saturday at 4 p.m where Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa will prove the majority per the directions of the apex court.

Refuting the claims of Congress, Union Minister and Karnataka in-charge Prakash Javdekar justified the appointment of Bopaiah as Pro Tem speaker. Citing the developments in 2008, the Minister stated that the Virajpet MLA had already helmed the post of Pro Tem speaker.
