BJP to prove majority: SC directs floor test in Karnataka at 4pm on Saturday

New Delhi, May 18: With the Supreme Court all set to hear the plea on formation of BJP Government in Karnataka; BJP Lawyer Mukul Rohatgi submitted letter of perusal before the bench. The Supreme Court directed that a floor test will to be conducted in the Karnataka Assembly on Saturday at 4 p.m. B.S. Yeddyurappa who was sworn in as the Chief Minister yesterday will have to prove his majority in the house.

The Bench comprising Justices A.K Sikri, S.A Bobde and Ashok Bhushan was hearing the petitions filed by Dr.G. Paremeshwara, Congress MLA and H.D Kumaraswamy, JD(S) MLA. It was on Wednesday night that the Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala invited the BJP led by B S Yeddyurappa to form government in Karnataka on on the basis of his claim that he had majority support.

Seeking letters of perusal, Mukul Rohatgi representing BJP handed over two reports to Supreme Court stating that BJP has support of necessary number of MLAs; and is ready to prove majority on floor of house. Hearing the petitions Justice Sikri remarked two options which consisted that the governor’s decision to be tested or to set a floor tests by Saturday. The SC said that the house is the ultimate decision maker as the house will decide who will be in majority.

While the decision of Supreme Court came up within no time, Mukul Rohatgi asked the court to give them a time span till Monday and extend the floor test by Monday. Mukul Rohatgi seeks more time for floor test saying there should be a reasonable time not one day.

SC directed not to nominate any Anglo-Indian community member as MLA till the floor test is over. To carry proper floor test, SC directed the Karnataka DGP to ensure security and make proper arrangement for floor test on Saturday. Recommending video grapghing of the entire floor test, the Surpreme Court rejected the suggestion of entire proceedings should be video graphed and ensure proper security to MLAs to vote fearlessly.
