Thoothukudi row: Kamal Haasan demands probe in police firing

Thoothukudi, May 23: A day after the horrifying developments at Thoothukudi, Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan today met demonstrators who were seriously injured during the protests against Sterlite industries at Thoothukudi. The MNM leader also interacted with family members of injured protestors at General Hospital. Anticipating the violent protest, Section 144 has been imposed by the state administration.

Speaking to the media, Kamal came down heavily on state government demanding a probe in the matter of police firing. The ace actor reiterated that stakeholders must take a cognizance of the issue raised by the people. He reiterated that constitution of Sterlite industries will affect the lives of people living in this region. Meanwhile, the Madurai bench of High Court has stayed the construction of a new copper smelter.

Yesterday, some locals were staging a protest against the proposed Sterlite factory in Thoothukudi. Protestors locked horn with police when they were not allowed to march towards the plant. The protest turned violent after eleven people were killed and more than 65 people injured in police firing. Reacting to the ongoing developments, former Union Minister and PMK Chief Anbumani Ramadoss blamed Palaniswami government and termed Thoothukudi clash as the state-sponsored cold-blooded murder. On the other hand, DMK has urged all political parties to support a united protest scheduled on May 25.
