Anti Sterlite Protest: CM Palaniswami says “Police firing was not pre-planned”

Chennai, May 25: Intensifying the violence in Thoothukuddi district over the Anti-Sterlite industries, the district administration has clarified that power and water supply to the Sterlite Copper smelting plant have been suspended as a prelude to its closure.

Also, Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami has confirmed closure of the plant by legal means. And also he has said in his tweets, “State government continues to respect views of people on Sterlite issue. Opposition parties instigating innocent people to agitate. Thoothukudi administrators met agitators 14 times about govt stand. TN pollution control board didn't renew the license for Sterlite.”

 

“Some political parties and leaders had misguided the agitators against Sterlite,” he said.

CM Palaniswami also clarified on the police firing saying, “When someone hits you, you naturally tend to defend yourselves. so on such situations, no one acts in a pre-planned manner.”

 

He further added, “Some anti-social elements intruded into the agitation on May 22 and attacked the police, torched the police vehicles. Under the tense situation, police resorted to firing and the firing was not pre-planned.”

Meanwhile, The district collector has said that normalcy is being restored in the district and buses have started plying in phases. The administration confirmed the death toll in the incidents as 13 and the number of injured as 102.
