Chennai, May 29: Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has ordered the permanent closure of the Thuthukkudi Copper Smelter plant.

A state government order issued this evening has clarified that the decision has been taken considering the feelings and aspirations of the public in this matter.

In the order, it is recollected, that the National Green Tribunal as well as the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had called for a permanent closure of the plant, citing environmental and health reasons.

The order also recalls that power and water connections of the plant were suspended last Wednesday following orders of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

The anti-Sterlite protests, demanding the closure of the plant last week had left 13 people dead and more than one hundred injured. Protestors said the plant was causing serious environmental hazards.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had ordered an inquiry by a retired high court judge on the police firing in Thuthukuddi on May 23. The Chief Minister had also announced that each of the families of the dead persons will be awarded compensation of 10 lakh rupees. The state government clarified that the police had to take unavoidable action to bring the situation under control.
