Thoothukudi closer a watershed moment in TN politics: MNM Chief Kamal Hassan

Chennai, May 29: Expressing happiness over Tamil Nadu state government’s move on Vedanta group’s Sterlite Copper factory at Thoothukudi, Makkal Needhi Maiam Chief Kamal Hassan termed it as the victory of the people. MNM Chief took to Twitter and said that political class should respect the public sentiment.

Dubbing Sterlite Copper factory decision as the path-breaking development in the state, the ace actor maintained that dynamic of state politics has been redefined by the people of Thoothukudi. Kamal opined that Government should have been sensitive to the protests of local people for over 100 days and acted swiftly.

Hassan observed that state government could have avoided the needless and unfortunate loss of lives last week. The actor-turned-politician advised state government to explore all the legal options if establishment moves to the court challenging the state government’s order.

Anticipating the serious law and order situation, Tamil Nadu state government on Monday shelved the ambitious project of Vedanta group’s Sterlite Copper factory at Thoothukudi. Several social and political outfits were staging a protest against the industrial establishment citing the degradation of the environment in the state.

On May 23, Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan met people who were seriously injured during the protests against Sterlite industries at Thoothukudi. The MNM leader also interacted with family members of injured protestors at General Hospital.
