Reshaping the scenario for 2019 elections, counting for 4 Lok Sabha, 10 Assembly bypolls underway; BJP leads in Kairana

New Delhi, May 31: The Election Commission conducted re-polling of the Lok Sabha polls due to snag in the voter verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) and electronic voting machine (EVM). The election commission announced re-poll in 73 polling stations in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana, 49 polling stations in Maharashtra's Bhandara-Gondia and one polling station in Nagaland. Counting of votes began at 8 am on Thursday (May 31) for the by-polls to four Lok Sabha seats and nine Assembly constituencies spread across 10 states.

 

Counting of votes begins for by-polls to four Lok Sabha seats and nine Assembly constituencies. The by-polls were held in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Punjab and West Bengal.

Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll result is important for the BJP in view of the shock defeat in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur by-polls held recently. The BJP had lost those by-polls to a united opposition. Bharatiya Janata Party's Mriganka Singh is now leading from the crucial Kairana Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, which is a key contest for the ruling party. The by-poll results will be crucial for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the run-up to 2019 Lok Sabha election.

In the Palus-Kadegaon by-poll in Maharashtra, voting was not held as Congress nominee Vishwakeet Kadam was elected unopposed. While the Bharatiya Janata Party withdrew from the race, the Shiv Sena decided to support the Congress candidate.

According to the running counting of the by polls, it has been noted that the BJP has been leading in Uttar Pradesh with Avni Singh (BJP) Party is leading from Noorpur Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Bharatiya Janata Party's Mriganka Singh is now leading from the crucial Kairana Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh.

Hemant Patle of the BJP is now leading from Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena's Shrinivas Wanga, the son of late BJP leader Chintaman Wanga, is leading from the Palghar Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra. Madhav Lal Singh of the BJP is leading from Gomia in Jharkhand.

Looking at the counting underway in West Bengal, Maheshtala, TMC is leading by 12,271 votes. CPI(M) is in second position and BJP on third. In Chengannoor by-polls, LDF candidate Saji Cherian is leading by 1591 votes after the first round of polling. UDF is at the second position and BJP at third.

The Assembly constituencies were: Bihar (Jokihat), Jharkhand (Gomia and Silli), Kerala (Chengannur), Uttar Pradesh (Noorpur), Uttarakhand (Tharali), Meghalaya (Ampati), Punjab (Shahkot) and West Bengal (Maheshtala).
