Singapore, June 12: After much anticipation of how the meeting would turn out to be, US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un shook hands and smiled as they started a historic summit on Tuesday, just months after the trade of being skeptical about the summit. For both the leaders, it is the first and a defining moment.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he had forged a “good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the start of a historic summit in Singapore on Tuesday, as the two men sought ways to end a nuclear standoff on the Korean peninsula.

Kim said the meeting was “a good prelude to peace”, but there was no immediate word on any substantive progress in their discussions.

The diplomatic breakthrough would bring a lasting change to the security landscape of Northern Asia. Both men sat alongside each other against a backdrop of North Korean and U.S. flags, with Kim beaming broadly as the U.S. president gave him a thumbs up. “There will be challenges ahead,” Kim said, but he vowed to work with Trump.

It was the first time that sitting leaders of the countries have met, and it came after years of bluster and threats from Pyongyang and from Trump that has raised fears of war.

Sitting next to US president, North Korea leader said there were a number of obstacles to the meeting. He said it was not easy to have reached where North Korea and the United States reached today. Kim said they have overcome old prejudices to arrive at this stage.

The bilateral summit between both the countries is aimed at normalizing bilateral ties and complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. It was the first time a sitting US president met a North Korean leader in the last 60 years.
