Srinagar, June 16: The Jammu and Kashmir government led by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday evening ordered the release of 115 prisoners from various prisons of the valley. The decision comes on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Notably, CM Mehbooba Mufti ordered the release of those 115 prisoners who were not involved in serious crimes. An official spokesperson from JK government said, "In view of the Eid-ul-Fitr, the government has ordered the release of 115 prisoners, with least involvement, from various jails of the state.”

The official further said, “CM Mufti had directed officials to release all those prisoners found not involved in serious crimes so that they can celebrate Eid with their families.” "The agencies concerned, after undertaking the exercise, decided to take a lenient view and effect their release," he concluded.

However, the decision also comes amidst spurt of violence spread by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir though the central government had ordered a conditional ceasefire. On June 14, a noted journalist and the editor of Rising Kashmir newspaper Syed Shujaat Bukhari along with his Personal Security Officer (PSO) were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Srinagar.

On the same day, the bullet-riddled body of an Army jawan named Aurangzeb, who was abducted by a group of terrorists was found in south Kashmir's Pulwama. Aurangzeb was on leave for Eid when he was abducted from Kalampora area in Pulwama and was later killed. Importantly, last year, the Jammu and Kashmir government did not release any prisoners for Eid.
