Imphal, June 2: After waiting for a considerable time, the Sports Department has finally seen the day of light. After the Union Cabinet on May 23 approved an ordinance to set up the country's first national sports university in Imphal, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the ordinance on Friday.

 

The Union Cabinet had decided to approve the proposal of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to promulgate the National Sports University Ordinance, 2018, by which the National Sports University will be established with headquarters at Manipur. The National Sports University Ordinance 2018 will be on the lines of National Sports University Bill 2017 which was introduced by the Lok Sabha in 2017.

It will be a specialized University, first of its kind, to promote sports education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching besides functioning as the national training center for select sports disciplines by adopting the best international practices.

The proposal was formally announced by the finance minister in his budget speech of 2014-15. For setting up the university, 325.90 acres of land has been made available by the Government of Manipur in the west Imphal district of Koutruk.

India undoubtedly has got immense talent pertaining to sports. With grabbing 66 medals in Commonwealth Games in Australia, India showcased their sports talents as bright future of India. So when the athletes gift the country with shining medals, the government gave them a return gift forming the sports university.
