Agra, June 4: Heading a step closer to the ‘World Environment Day’ on June 5, India has incorporated the baseline of ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and the citizens have come forward disseminating their share to the environment. The most successful mission and accomplishing Mahatma Gandhiji’s dream of having a clean environment is however seen to reach its peak with people coming together.

To spread awareness on keeping our environment safe and clean, UN Goodwill Ambassador Dia Mirza has been quite vocal about it. And in the latest series of making people aware about the same, she said that it is the responsibility of every individual to bring down the negative impact of pollution by reducing the use of plastic in our daily life.

Speaking at the ‘Shared Vision for Urban Sustainability’ for World Environment day, Dia Mirza expressed her views saying that there is an umbilical link between ecosystem and economy. Human well-being and quality of life are only possible through resource efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Union Minister for culture and environment Mahesh Sharma on Sunday administered a pledge to Agra residents for making areas around Taj Mahal, in a radius of 500 meters, free of litter and polythene and reducing the presence of single-use plastic products near and around the monument.

Before the adoption of the declaration, the Culture Ministry held a stakeholders' workshop chaired by Sharma. The workshop focussed on curbing pollution near the 17th-century monument and drawing short-term and long-term plans to deal with the problem.

At a programme of ‘Taj Declaration to Beat Plastic Pollution’, the Union minister said this decision was taken by the central and state government and a similar rule would be applied to 100 “Adarsh” monuments across the nation. The pledge was taken in the presence of Erik Solheim, executive director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), goodwill ambassador and actress Diya Mirza, local MPs, MLAs and administrative officials, among others.
