15,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day, 9,000 tonnes are collected and recycled, but 6,000 tonnes of plastic waste is not collected and remain littered. So it is our responsibility to throw the least plastic possible. World Environment Day is a platform for encouraging awareness and propagating the need for protecting the environment. The theme for the year 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

In our everyday life, we heavily use Plastic materials without realizing the adverse effect. The plastic material has the potential to harm both soil and water. Instead of thousands of campaign to use paper bags, we never leave the habit of using plastic bags. Even after use, we throw plastic bags in such a place that would cause harm to nature. When we travel somewhere, we often can observe someone throws their wastes wrapped in a Plastic bag in water. The high level of toxicity harms the creature in waters leading to a distorted ecology of water and high pollutes the water.

India is the global host nation for the 43rd edition of this event. Though a large part of the population depends on plastic for their daily use, nearly one-third of it is not disposed off properly and ends up clogging drains and choking the environment. This day is a call for awakening of individuals to take charge of protecting their environment and to realize the severity of plastic usage in daily life.
