Dehradun, June 6: Polythene vendors of Uttarakhand! Finish your polythene stock before 31st July as it will be completely prohibited by that date. This announcement was made by CM Trivendra Singh Rawat on the occasion of World Environment Day.

“A comprehensive public awareness campaign will be launched on environmental damage caused by polythene, one week before the entire ban on polythene in the state,” says CM Rawat.

Rawat stated that, in addition to the social organizations, people's cooperation is also necessary to make Uttarakhand a polythene-free state.

This year’s World Environment Day was hosted by India with the theme “Beat the Plastic Pollution.” Various initiatives were taken by the Government and people too. Indian Railways started using fully biodegradable packages in 4 Shatabadi and 4 Rajadhani trains from Delhi, contributing towards a greener planet.

15,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day, 9,000 tonnes are collected and recycled, but 6,000 tonnes of plastic waste is not collected and remain littered. So it is our responsibility to throw the least plastic possible. World Environment Day is a platform for encouraging awareness and propagating the need for protecting the environment.

So this is the high time that we shall be aware of what is happening on our planet and we get a call from mother earth that “you have two options: Plastic or Planet.”
