Mumbai, June 7: On 5th June, 'World Environment Day' was celebrated across the globe with the theme of #BeatThePlasticPollution. Over the years India has been drowning in the sea of plastic and therefore UN had declared New Delhi as the global host for this year's World Environment Day.

However, this is a high time when we should not only create awareness but also adopt the values to keep our mother nature safe and secure. Nearly 150 countries and various international organizations including United Nations (UN), World Health Organization (WHO) etc celebrated World Environment Day. Likewise, Oriental Education Society, a well-known Public Charitable Trust working in education sector celebrated World Environment Day to create awareness and action for the protection of our environment.

Mountains of plastic and rubbish are polluting and choking the drains, while streets are lined up with bags of trash and rivers are full of waste and pollution in the country. Pondering over this grievous issue, Oriental Education Society came forward to create awareness among the students and directed them the ways of protecting Mother Earth - our planet where we breathe and live.

With this mission, Oriental Education Society invited a known environmentalist Prakash Kadam, who delivered a lecture session to the young brigade and displayed an exhibition of photographs clicked by him projecting various aspects of Nature, our Mother Earth in the college campus.

Prakash Kadam also spoke about the present condition of the existing species and what we can do to protect them from the rapid consequences of Industrialization. He suggested the students should take up an individual project related to environment and extensive research on the same.

He even asked each one of them to plant a sapling on their birthday and see it grow along with them every year. “These small deeds will make each individual feel connected to nature and consecutively will sensitize us towards our responsibilities towards Mother Earth,” he concluded.

While addressing the gathering, Prof Rao Saheb who is a Principal of Sanpada College of Commerce and Technology said that the duties of a citizen begin from home. “So we should start thinking of segregating dry waste and wet waste before throwing out the garbage in the bins and thus free ourselves from the use of plastic bags,” he added.

The one-day event which was an eye-opener for the students was also graced by Principal of OES Pharmacy, Dr.Sudha Rathod and Principal of OES, Bed, Dr. Ratani Thakur. The President of Oriental Education Society Javed Khan also visited the exhibition and invoked the students how to serve the environment.
