Giving boost to ease of transport, Railway and Maharashtra Metro join hands to shrink travelling from Mumbai to Nagpur

Nagpur, July 17: Leveling up new heights of ease of transport, the Indian Railways inked an agreement with the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation to create a mass rapid transit system in the city. Under the signed agreement it has been notified that Railways and MahaMetro would work towards linking railway line to metro trains on the broad estimated network in Nagpur.

 

MoU signed between Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, Central Railways, and GoM aims for the introduction of modern EMU train sets in place of existing conventional passengers train in and around Nagpur.

Speaking at the event, signing the MoU, Minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal asserted that his ministry is also trying to execute a plan for setting up railway line across the national highways. The MoU was signed at the presence of road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

Aiming to cover the distance, Nagpur-Mumbai Super Express Way (Samriddhi Mahamarg) will be connected to railway line connecting Nagpur and Mumbai. Goyal further said his ministry has allocated Rs 67,000 crore for development of suburban railway network in Mumbai which is being used by one-third of total railway passengers in the country.

Asserting the decision to be historic for Nagpur, CM Devendra Fadnavis said that the pact will avail other places near Nagpur to assure benefit from the broad gauge Metro services. Production of the Metro coach in Nagpur is also underway.

The transport will also avail six cars formation comprising of 2 units of 3 cars having carting capacity of 2000 passengers initially on 4 routes. (Nagpur-Wardha, Nagpur-Katol under the Central Railway and Nagpur-Bhandara & Itwari-Ramtek under South East Central Railway.

Meanwhile, the state government also signed a MoU in presence of CM Fadnavis between Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) and Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation, Nagpur (VIDC) for utilization of unused water from Inder-Kamptee & Gondegaon opencast mine for irrigation to nearby villages.
