It’s no more Elphinstone Road, Call it "Prabhadevi"!

Mumbai, July 19: Ek Elphinstone station ka ticket dena! Oops, it no more Elphinstone station, Call it Prabhadevi! With effect from July 18 midnight, the Elphinstone Station was renamed to Prabhadevi by the Western Railway.


From 12:00 am, July 19, Thursday, Elphinstone Road station, which made news after a deadly stampede on staircase claimed 14 lives and injured several in September 2017, will be known as Prabhadevi station.


 

The Western Railway confirming the news said that the station code of Prabhadevi station will be PBHD. The statement by the Western Railway further stated that necessary changes were being made to the station boards, indicators and PA system for the benefit of passengers.

 

The station was initially named after Lord Elphinstone, who was the Governor of Bombay Presidency from 1853 to 1860. It has now been renamed in honor of a local deity.


The decision to change the name of the station to Prabhadevi was passed in the Winter Session of the Maharashtra Assembly in Nagpur on 16 December 2016.

 
In December 2017, the Maharashtra legislature had approved a Bill to rename Elphinstone Road station, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
