New Delhi, July 19: Social media giant Facebook has said that it will remove bogus posts which are likely to spark violence. Facebook's spokesperson said that the new policy will be implemented during the coming months and Facebook may remove inaccurate or misleading content, such as doctored photos, created or shared to stir up to ignite volatile situations in the real world.

This is part of the Facebook's campaign to prevent the platform from being used to spread dangerous misinformation. The social network said it is partnering with local organizations and authorities adept at identifying when posts are false and likely to prompt violence.

Facebook says the new policy will partnering with local civil-society groups to identify text and image content with the purpose of “contributing to or exacerbating violence or physical harm” for removal. The media report also notes that the process will involve Facebook’s internal image recognition technologies, presumably a similar system to the one it uses to automatically purge revenge porn from the site.

“We have identified that there is a type of misinformation that is shared in certain countries that can incite underlying tensions and lead to physical harm offline,” Facebook product manager Tessa Lyons said.
