Law Commission to consult political outfits on simultaneous election

New Delhi, July 2: In order to build a larger consensus on the notion of simultaneous election, Law Commission has decided to hold a two-day brainstorming session with all major political parties. On July 7 and 8, political outfits will discuss the proposed roadmap and feasibility of One nation one election.

On several occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the frequency of elections in the country. He also underlined the administrative problems associated with the model code of conduct. The Prime Minister has urged citizens to debate on the issue of simultaneous elections. On April 17, a working draft on ‘Simultaneous Elections – Constitutional and Legal Perspective’, was published by the law commission.

Recently, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath openly backed the idea pitched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On June 5, Adityanath formed a committee under the chairmanship of Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh to study the feasibility of the proposed electoral reform. The findings and recommendations of the committee will be submitted to the Centre.
