Washington, July 24: Lashkar e Tayyiba terrorist and 26/11 Mumbai attack conspirator Pakistani-American David Coleman Headley, who jailed in the US over his prime role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is fighting for his life after being attacked in prison, say media reports but the US authorities are saying to confirm.

As per some media reports, Headley was attacked on 8 July by two other inmates. The reports said he suffered serious injuries and was rushed to North Evanston hospital, where he was admitted to the critical care unit.

Headley has been sentenced to 35 years in prison by a US court for the 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai that killed more than 160 people. Headley is said to be in the ICU after being attacked by other prisoners at a detention centre, allegedly on July 8.

The Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago said in a brief email response to PTI, "We are not able to locate information about this individual."

Headley recced various Indian cities before the 26/11 attacks - was arrested in 2009. Headley conducted recce of the places in Mumbai which were attacked by 10 LeT terrorists on November 26, 2008, also revealed that the outfit had initially planned to attack a conference of Indian Indian defence scientists in Taj Mahal Hotel and also disclosed that he had also conducted a recce of the famous Siddhivinayak Temple and Naval air station on directions of LeT commanders.

He had testified before a court in Mumbai through video conferencing from his prison in the US during the trial of Mumbai attacks mastermind Abu Jundal.

Headley’s statement that Ishrat Jahan who was killed in an encounter was a Lashkar-e-Taiba fidayeen and was recruited by top Lashkar commander Muzammil who was in charge of LeT's operations in India till 2007, uphold the Indian security forces especially the Intelligence Bureau and the Gujarat Police who were haunted by the Congress Party for years.

In 2013, The US Dept of Justice released a statement in which it is stated: In pleading guilty and later testifying for the government at the trial of a co-defendant, Headley admitted that he attended training camps in Pakistan operated by Lashkar e Tayyiba, a terrorist organization operating in that country, on five separate occasions between 2002 and 2005. In late 2005, Headley received instructions from three members of Lashkar to travel to India to conduct surveillance, which he did five times leading up to the Mumbai attacks in 2008 that killed approximately 164 people, including six Americans, and wounded hundreds more. Headley’s plea agreement in March 2010 stated that he “has provided substantial assistance to the criminal investigation, and also has provided information of significant intelligence value.”
