Mahadayi Water Dispute: Goa to file a contempt petition against Karnataka’s alleged water diversion

Panaji, July 25: After Cauvery water sharing row with Tamil Nadu, Karnataka government has once again mired into the controversy. This time the dispute is with neighboring state Goa. Accusing Karnataka government of alleged illegal water diversions, Goa government has decided to file a contempt plea with centrally appointed Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal.

Speaking to the media, citing the reports of alleged water diversion into Malaprabha basin, water resources minister Vinod Palyekar said that Goa government would move to Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal against the reported diversion by the neighboring state.

The Minister also claimed that a special tunnel to divert the water to the Malaprabha basin has been constructed by the Karnataka. He informed that a team of Goa officials took the stock of ground zero in Karnataka's Kanakumbi village.

According to media reports, Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal is likely to announce its final verdict on much awaited inter-state water sharing problem between Goa and Karnataka.
