Ravi Shankar Prasad orders CBI probe in Cambridge Analytica data breach; assures security measures for digital platform

New Delhi, July 26: Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has announced that Cambridge Analytica data breach case will be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Addressing the question hour in Rajya Sabha, the Minister assured that the Central government will take all possible measures in order to avoid the misuse of social media platforms. Prasad mentioned that government and concern establishment will take stern action against the offenders.

The Minister directed Social media service providers to follow the guidelines issued by the government. He informed that a new set of guidelines will be announced for all digital platforms.

Commenting on the controversial WhatsApp posts, Prasad stated that government had summoned the global messaging platform after the horrible incidents of lynching.

“Whatsapp took steps to increase friction in propagation of content by reducing forwards to 5 and indicating whether message is forwarded”, said IT Minister.

Prasad underlined that new security checking feature along with fake news verification module will be incorporated by WhatsApp.

“An awareness campaign about social media and false news will be initiated in order to educate school children”, said Prasad.
