Another step to double farmer’s income by 2022 ‘Meghalaya Milk Mission’

Shillong, July 30: In order to facilitate in achieving the Central government’s goal of doubling farmers' income by 2022 a mission has been launched named the Meghalaya Milk Mission which will help to promote milk business in the state on Sunday.


 

Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has announced a project of 215 crores rupees for the mission, through National Cooperative Development Corporation. The Minister said, “The amount will be utilized for various training under dairy farm, chilling center and purchase of the milch animal. The Milk Mission will enable the state to substitute the import of milk with the state’s own production.”

Singh said it will generate alternative livelihoods for the rural people of the state through the dairy sector. He said, 2000 farmers, will be directly benefitted by this Mission over the next four years.

The project consists of 2000 dairy farm units, in one unit there is provision for purchase of 5 cows, shed constructions, storage room construction, animal insurance, 79 bulk milk coolers of 500-liter capacity, 13 milk tankers of 3000-liter capacity etc. There is also a provision of Rs 1 crore for the training of farmers in the project. The launch of the Mission, the minister said, will benefit Meghalaya immensely.

Earlier, Singh visited an organic farm at Lawsohtun area and assured all possible help to the farmers. The Minister, who was on a two-day visit to the state, interacted with members of around 20 families who practice organic farming and encouraged them to expand their activities in other parts of the state.
