Benefitting people, Tripura makes ration card free for tribal families

Tripura, July 7: In a new welcoming move, the Tripura government has decided to provide free ration cards to almost 62,000 families. The decision was taken by the cabinet; states that the government will provide free ration cards to the tribal blocks in the state.

The State Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath addressing the media said that the government will be enabling this fee ration cards to 62,000 families of the tribal blocks. Making it available for 10 tribal blocks, the families will get this facility for two months because during this time they face a shortage of foods.

He also said that one family would get 20 kg of rice per month and for this 2442 tonnes of rice would be required. Transport Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said, “The government also announced a hike in transport fare by 20% in view of increased fuel prices and another material cost.”

The decision, which would benefit 61,058 indigenous families in Chamanu, Damcherra, Dashda, Damburnagar, Karbook, Mungiakami, Raishyabari, Rupaichari, Silchar and Tulashikhar blocks, was adopted at a cabinet meeting on Thursday.

The minister added that the Antodaya Annapurna Yojana ration consumers, who get rice at Rs 2 per kg as per the public distribution system (PDS) guidelines, would continue to get the same profit alongside the additional benefit.

Besides, "priority groups" enrolled in the PDS would get 5kg of rice at Rs 2 per kg every month as usual, along with 20kg free rice in these two months as well.

The exercise would need 2,442kg additional rice, Nath said, adding that the decision would be implemented for this year alone.
