Brussels, July 9: Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned from the UK government. The resignation comes days after British Prime Minister Theresa May secured the Cabinet's backing for her Brexit plan at a meeting at Chequers outside London.

Shortly after Davis' resignation, his deputy Steve Baker, and another Brexit Minister Suella Braverman also quit.

The development is being seen as a major blow for May as she tries to unite her party behind a plan to retain strong economic ties to the European Union even after leaving the bloc.

In his resignation letter, Davis said, the general direction of policy will leave Britain in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one.

In her reply, May said, her plan will undoubtedly mean the returning of powers from Brussels to the United Kingdom and was in line with her commitment to leave the European single market and customs union.

The Prime Minister is due to address Parliament today to explain her plan for Britain to adopt EU rules on goods after Brexit.
