CM HD Kumaraswamy pitches for Belagavi as the second capital Karnataka

Bengaluru, Aug 1: In order to placate the ongoing protest on the issue of separate north Karnataka state, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy might revisit his 12-year old proposal of Belagavi as the second capital of the state.

As quoted by NDTV, the Kumaraswamy government has decided to shift some key administrative offices to Belagavi. According to media reports, the JD(S) – Congress government soon will take the final call on the long-pending proposal. Incidentally, Belagavi has Suvarna Soudha, Karnataka state assembly which lookalike of Bengaluru's Vidhana Soudha.

The Chief Minister recently came under fire after presenting the maiden budget. Expressing displeasure over the provisions of the maiden Budget of Kumaraswamy, Several north Karnataka outfits blamed HDK for alleged negligence of the north Karnataka.

North Karnataka is considered as the most backward region of the state whereas southern part enjoys better resources and opportunities. The pro-north Karnataka groups have announced a day-long bandh which is scheduled on August 2. Some religious leaders have backed the demand of separate north Karnataka state.


On Tuesday, Kumaraswamy met pro-north Karnataka groups and gave assured balanced development of the region. He slammed BJP for politicizing the matter, keeping eye on 2019 general election.

Meanwhile, BJP state President and former Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa slammed Kumaraswamy for not addressing key problems faced by the people of north Karnataka region.

In 2006, Janata Dal (Secular)- BJP government had passed a resolution on Belagavi as Karnataka's second capital. The successive government did not pay attention to the proposal of the second capital city.
