Union Cabinet okays bill to restore the original provisions of SC/ST Act

New Delhi, Aug 1: Narendra Modi led BJP government at center has finally decided to overturn the ruling of the apex court order on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

According to media reports, the Union Cabinet today has cleared the desk for amendment bill which will restore the original provisions of the SC/ST Act. This move came after the announcement of a 'Bharat Bandh' on August 9 by various Dalit outfits.

From the beginning, Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party was against the Supreme Court’s decision. The key NDA Partner from Bihar was pitching hard for the restoration of SC/ST act.

Earlier, Chirag Paswan, son of Ram Vilas Paswan who represents Jamui segment in Lok Sabha had sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention on SC/ST act. Commenting on the Supreme Court’s ruling, Paswan urged ruling party to address the contentious issue with the immediate promulgation of an ordinance in order to safeguard the interest of weaker section.

The Lok Sabha MP also demanded the sacking of Justice Goyal who had passed the judgment on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The regional outfit questioned the appointment of Justice Goyal as the Chief of National Green Tribunal (NGT).
