Assam drops curtain for the second phase of NRC Draft, form filling for claims and objections begins from today

Guwahati, August 10: As the opposition and particularly the Trinamool Congress continue to create controversy over the National Register of Citizens for the people of Assam, published on July 30, the second phase that is the claims and objections phase for NRC has started from Friday.

The Parliament also saw ruckus over the release of the final NRC Draft. But as always the Home Ministry was adamant on its stand that the release of NRC is just a draft and not the final outcome, the people have an opportunity to prove their authentic identification and claim their citizenship. As claimed the second phase of for NRC opened its door on Friday in its NRC website.

What is claim and objections phase?

During the claims and objections period that will continue till September 28, those who could not find their names in the final draft NRC can ask the authorities for the reason behind non-inclusion of their names in the draft. Once satisfied, the authorities may then add their names in the final NRC, that is expected to be issued later this year.

What to do?

Forms for the application are available at the NSK and one can download them online from www.nrcassam.nic.in. Once the forms are filled, one can submit them to the authorities concerned from August 30 till September 28.

Another important aspect of the claims and objections phase is that, during this period any individual who feels that someone whose name shouldn't have been there in the NRC has made it to it, he or she can also object to it with proper proofs. If the allegations were found true, the name in question will be removed, but if found false, the complainant might have to face the consequences. However, the consequences are yet to be known as the Centre is yet to submit the SOPs for the same to the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court will hear the case related to NRC on August 16, and on August 8, the Apex Court gave clear instructions to the Centre to submit the modalities and SOPs before that.

The Supreme Court on August 8 also warned Registrar General of India Shri Shailesh and NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela for giving statements before the media looking into the sensitivity of the issue.
