Tamil Nadu government failed on Thoothukudi issue: DMK leader Kanimozhi

 

Four days after the demise of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the Rajya Sabha MP took to Twitter and launched a scratching attack on Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami.

Reacting to the National Green Tribunal’s order on controversial Vedanta group, Kanimozhi said that the AIADMK government has miserably failed in defending its own closer order.

Earlier, the legal body granted conditional access to Vedanta to open and operate its Sterlite Copper plant at Thoothukudi. Kanimozhi opined that the state government should have prepared adequately to defend the order of closure of Sterlite Copper plant.

On 22nd May, 13 people were killed during a protest against Sterlite plant. Anticipating the law and order problem, the state government had announced the shutdown of Vedanta project. Later, Vedanta group approached the NGT against the closure order of Tamil Nadu government.

Referring to the controversial move of TN government where it denied permission for late Karunanidhi’s burial near Anna Memorial at Marina beach, Kanimozhi took a dig at Counsel CS Vaidhyanathan and said, “CS. Vaidhyanathan was busy justifying the denial of space to our leader Kalaignar at Marina in Madras HC.” The DMK leader accused Palaniswami of politicizing Karunanidhi’s death.

On August 7, Tamil Nadu government had denied the request of a burial space for Karunanidhi near Anna Memorial at Marina beach. Irked with the government’s decision, the principal opposition party filed a plea in the court. Later, the Madras High Court granted permission for Karunanidhi’s burial at iconic Marina Beach.
