Indian envoy calls on Pakistan PM-elect Imran Khan; draws attention over cross-border firing, infiltration and terrorism

Islamabad, August 11: Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria on Friday met Pakistan’s newly-elected Prime Minister and Tehreek-e-Insaf Party Chairperson Imran Khan and draw his attention on cross-border firing, infiltration and terrorism.

 

Notably, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI) emerged as the single largest party with 116 seats in the July 25 general election and will take the oath of Prime Minister on August 18.


The Indian High Commissioner met Imran Khan at his Banigala residence in the suburbs of Islamabad and congratulated him for winning the elections. Ajay Bisaria also gifted a cricket bat autographed by the entire Indian cricket team.


In a tweet, the Indian High Commission said, “In response to a media query on Indian High Commissioner, Ajay Bisaria’s meeting with Mr. Imran Khan, Chairperson, PTI, the Spokesperson of the Indian High Commission noted that the Indian High Commissioner today called on Mr. Imran Khan and senior leadership of PTI in Islamabad.”


“The High Commissioner congratulated Mr. Khan on his electoral success. They discussed a range of issues focusing on prospects of the India-Pakistan relationship. The meeting lasted for thirty minutes and was marked by a candid exchange of views,” the Indian High Commission added.


According to the Pakistani media, Imran Khan in a meeting with Bisaria stressed the need to restart the dialogue between the two countries on all outstanding issues, including Kashmir. He also expressed concern over alleged human rights violations in the Valley. Khan also hoped for India's participation in the SAARC summit, scheduled to be held in Islamabad.

The meeting came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 30 called and congratulated Khan on his success in the election. PM Modi also reiterated his vision of peace and development in the entire neighbourhood.
