President-elect of UN calls on PM Modi to discuss major global challenges including terrorism

New Delhi, August 11: President-elect of the United Nations General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces on Friday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the need for stronger UN action on major global challenges including terrorism, reform and climate change.

 

On this occasion, PM Modi congratulated Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces on her election to the post of President of the 73rd UN General Assembly. The two leaders discussed the need for stronger UN action on major global challenges including terrorism, reform and climate change.

Espinosa further shared her priorities for the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly. On the other side, PM Modi assured her of India’s full and constructive cooperation in discharging her new responsibilities.

Espinosa in a tweet said, “Successful meeting with the PM of India @narendramodi on my arrival to Delhi. I shared my priorities. We agreed on the importance of implementing commitments and improving the efficiency of the UN. I thanked him for India’s support to my office. We will continue working together.”


Notably, Ecuadorian politician and poet Espinosa becomes fourth woman to preside over UN General Assembly. She will also meet External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday. Espinosa is also expected to address an interactive session on the ‘Revitalisation of UN General Assembly’ at Indian Council of World Affairs at Sapru House in New Delhi.
