President-elect of UN calls on Sushma Swaraj to discuss on key issues including counter-terrorism, reform in Security Council

New Delhi, August 14: President-elect of the United Nations General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces on Monday called on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and discussed on key issues such as revitalization of the world body, including reform of the Security Council and strengthening global counter-terrorism legal framework.

 

On this occasion, Sushma Swaraj conveyed her congratulations to Garces on becoming the 4th woman President of the UNGA in its history and reiterated India's support to the President-Elect in carrying out her duties. Notably, this comes four days after Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the meeting, the External Affairs Minister emphasized the need for UNSC reforms, especially continuation of the Inter-Governmental Negotiations, as well as early finalization of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. She also highlighted India's commitments as part of the South-South Cooperation.


Meanwhile, Garces outlined her priorities in the next one year as President of UNGA, especially revitalization of the United Nations, including the General Assembly as well as Security Council reforms.


During her 4 day visit to India, Garces visited Dilli Haat where she interacted with various NGOs involved in womens' development projects and Sustainable Development Goals. She inaugurated "Delhi Process-IV”, an event commemorating BAPA+40, organized by RIS at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. She also delivered a speech on the theme "Revitalization of the United Nations” at the Indian Council of World Affairs, Sapru House in New Delhi.
